Are you an international nursing student on an F-1 Visa? Here’s a step-by-step guide to Interstaff’s F-1 program, offering a closer look at the rewarding journey many of our nurses are experiencing today.

Step 1: Complete the Pre-Screening Form

Your journey to a rewarding nursing career in the U.S. begins here. Within a year of graduation, complete Interstaff’s short pre-screening form. This first step sets the foundation for the rest of your path, helping us understand your background and aspirations.

Step 2: Complete the Pre-Qualification Form

After the pre-screening form, you’ll receive an email with a pre-qualification form. Filling this out ensures you meet the necessary criteria and prerequisites to continue with Interstaff’s F-1 program. This step is essential in assessing eligibility and securing an interview with an Interstaff employee.

Step 3: Interview with Interstaff

With your qualifications aligned, the next milestone is the interview. This is a valuable opportunity for both you and Interstaff to assess the compatibility of your goals with the nursing roles we support. The interview allows us to discuss your education, address any questions, and ensure a strong match.

Step 4: Contract and Job Placement Discussions

Once you pass the interview, we move forward with offering you a contract. At this stage, we’ll explore job placements based on your preferred locations and available opportunities. Together, we’ll identify the best fit for your nursing career.

Step 5: Apply for OPT (Optional Practical Training)

With your job placement identified, it’s time to apply for OPT. OPT is a temporary employment authorization that allows you to work in your field of study for up to a year post-graduation. We recommend setting your OPT start date approximately 60 days after graduation, ensuring a smooth transition from student to registered nurse.

Step 6: Start Preparing for the NCLEX Exam

While awaiting OPT approval, you’ll focus on preparing for the NCLEX exam. An early and thorough study will help you confidently tackle this essential exam and move forward in your career.

Step 7: Pass the NCLEX Exam

With the NCLEX-RN exam successfully completed, your dedication has paid off! Interstaff will then assist in obtaining the necessary licensure, preparing you to practice as an RN in the U.S. and setting you on the path to begin your nursing journey.

Step 8: Relocation and Orientation

Upon passing the NCLEX, Interstaff will help coordinate your relocation to your designated work location. Typically, this occurs within 2-6 weeks of NCLEX success. When you arrive, a member of the Interstaff team will meet you in your new city, introduce you to other Interstaff nurses, and help you get oriented with your new home and hospital.

Step 9: Begin Working as a Registered Nurse

The moment you’ve worked so hard for has arrived—you’re ready to begin your role as a registered nurse! Stepping into your position, you’ll start making a positive impact on patient care and contributing to the healthcare community in your new home.

Step 10: Visa Interview

The long-awaited day has arrived! Interstaff has guided you through the filing process, supporting you in every way possible as you work towards your goal of securing permanent residency and continuing your nursing career in the U.S. It is time to attend an interview at a US embassy where a consular officer will review your application and verify your eligibility.

Achieving Your Dream: A Pathway with Purpose

Transitioning from student to practicing nurse with permanent residency in the U.S. may seem complex, but with each step thoughtfully planned and with Interstaff’s guidance, it’s an achievable and rewarding process. Every milestone brings you closer to fulfilling your dream of a successful nursing career in the United States, enriching your professional growth and life experience.
