The 2019 theme for National Nurses Week is “4 Million Reasons to Celebrate” to honor the 4 million Registered Nurses in America. That number may seem significantly high but, unfortunately, that amount of nurses will not prevent a nursing shortage.
The growing shortage will be felt over the next decade in the United States and there will be a significant number of RN jobs available through 2022—more than any other profession in the nation.
The US Bureau of Statistics states that America will need 1.2 million additional nurses to prevent an increased shortage. Every state is experiencing a shortage due to the aging Baby Boomer population (born between 1946-1964), more health-care needs among the greater population, and a lack of skilled nursing facilities to train qualified nurses. In addition, it is estimated that about 25% of currently-working RNs will retire over the next 10-15 years. Sadly, there aren’t enough trained, new nurses to replace the retiring nurses and/or make up for the increased demand of nurses.
